Your Oral Microbiome Is Linked to Pancreatic Cancer Risk — Here's What a Major New Study Found

Brushing your teeth might be doing more for your health than you ever imagined — and new science published in one of the world's most prestigious medical journals is making that case more compellingly than ever.

A landmark study in JAMA Oncology (September 2025) found that specific bacteria and fungi living in your mouth are significantly associated with the risk of developing pancreatic cancer — one of the deadliest and hardest-to-detect cancers in the world. The findings open the door to a future where a simple oral swab could help identify people at high risk years before a tumor ever forms.


The Study at a Glance

Researchers from NYU Grossman School of Medicine analyzed oral samples from over 122,000 people across two large epidemiological cohorts. Of those, 445 went on to develop pancreatic cancer over a median follow-up of nearly 9 years. Scientists compared their oral microbiomes — the bacterial and fungal communities living in their mouths — to matched controls who remained cancer-free.

The results were striking.


What They Found: The Usual Suspects and Some Surprises

Three well-known periodontal pathogensPorphyromonas gingivalis, Eubacterium nodatum, and Parvimonas micra — were each independently linked to an increased risk of pancreatic cancer. These are the same bacteria associated with gum disease and poor oral hygiene.

But the study went further. A comprehensive scan of the entire oral microbiome identified:

  • 13 oral bacterial species associated with increased pancreatic cancer risk
  • 8 oral bacterial species associated with decreased risk
  • Candida (a fungal genus) also linked to increased risk

When researchers combined these findings into a single Microbial Risk Score using 27 oral species, individuals with the highest scores had over 3 times the risk of developing pancreatic cancer compared to those with the lowest scores (odds ratio: 3.44).


Why This Matters

Pancreatic cancer is notoriously difficult to catch early. By the time most cases are diagnosed, the cancer has already spread — which is a major reason its five-year survival rate remains below 15%. There are currently no reliable, widely used screening tools for average-risk individuals.

  • Reduce sugar intake — harmful oral bacteria feed on fermentable sugars
